Overview
Once you arrive in La Palma, the journey begins with a stop in the capital, where you’ll discover some of the island’s most significant sights, including:
The Barco de la Virgen, a reproduction of the Santa MarÃa, the vessel used by Christopher Columbus during his voyage to America. This replica commemorates the sailors from La Palma who set sail on ships constructed from local timber. Inside, there is a naval museum displaying maritime charts and models of some of the ships crafted on the island. The Castillo de Santa Catalina, once one of Spain’s key fortresses along the route to the Americas. The traditional balconies, which are among the best-preserved in the Canary Islands, particularly the double balconies designed to provide ventilation to the houses.
The tour continues to the Mirador de la Concepción, a viewpoint located at the peak of the Caldereta volcano, a site recognized as a “natural area.” Here, you’ll get a glimpse of the crater and the island’s capital. Moving on, you’ll pass through the Tunnel of Time, where you can observe the island’s changing landscape, before heading southwest to the area impacted by the Cumbre Vieja volcano.
Next, you’ll stop in the exclusion zone of Tacande, where you’ll catch your first view of the volcano. The tour then proceeds to Tazacorte, where you can witness Spain’s most recent lava flows.
Lunch will be enjoyed at a local restaurant around 1:30 PM. Following the meal, from the port of Tazacorte, you’ll see the newly formed land or lava delta created by the eruption.
The final destination is the Tajuya viewpoint, offering a safe vantage point from 2 kilometers away to observe the newest volcano in the Canary Islands, which still awaits its name.
